Wellington kept rolling Tuesday night, notching its seventh consecutive win to earn a berth in the Class 5A girls soccer regional semifinals in Wellington.
Lauryn Auger scored the game’s only goal on a header with 2:32 remaining, lifting the Wolverines to a 1-0 victory over visiting Spanish River in a regional quarterfinal.
Wellington improved to 19-3-1 and will face Boca Raton on Friday. The Sharks (11-7-3) were eliminated from the postseason.
“These cardiac kids — they just find a way to win it,” Wolverines coach Miguel Torregrosa said. “I’m honestly thankful, and very grateful to be their coach, because they’re just an amazing team. We’re so looking forward to (the next match).”
Wellington pressed forward early, keeping the ball in Spanish River’s end for most of the first half.
The Wolverines took numerous shots, and had a handful of good scoring opportunities early and late.
A free kick by Samantha Jenkins in the 10th minute was deflected, while a long blast from Megan Miserendino in the 13th minute was saved by Sharks goalie Sai Rich.
Rich continued to come up big for Spanish River in the first half, and helped stave off a late flurry by the Wolverines that included a close-range shot from Erin Berlingo that hit the goalpost and bounced away.
Despite having chances, Wellington wasn’t able to find the back of the net to close the first half, and the game was scoreless at halftime.
“They slowed down our offense,” Torregrosa said of the Sharks. “They did the right things to keep us in check at every turn.”
The second half started the same way as the first, with the Wolverines threatening early, but still off-target with their shots.
Wellington kept up the pressure, and had a chance with 11 minutes remaining on a long shot from Auger, but her blast sailed over the net.
The senior captain didn’t miss the next time, heading in a cross from Alexandra Rehr eight minutes later for the game-winning goal.
The Wolverines then ran out the clock to secure the win.
