Girls basketball: Santaluces, Benjamin, Cardinal Newman win openers

Santaluces 62, Seminole Ridge 44: Emiah Downie had 17 points, Brittany Powell added 14 and Whitney Howell contributed 13 as the Chiefs (1-0) defeated the Hawks in the season opener. Jahnae Midget had 19 points and Aneeshae Cason added 12 for Seminole Ridge.

Benjamin 47, Lake Worth 24: Deborrah Redmon had 11 points and grabbed six steals, Devyn Dyett added 10 points, and Da’Mya Preston contributed nine points and nine rebounds as the Buccaneers handled the Trojans in Lake Worth.

Cardinal Newman 49, Berean Christian 46: Grace Hundley had 19 points and eight rebounds, Bianca Cantando added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Madeline Biton grabbed 10 rebounds as the Crusaders handled the Bulldogs in West Palm Beach.

Lake Worth Christian 53, American Heritage 8: Jillian Schenck had 20 points and two blocks, Riley Mizell added nine points, and JodiBeth Elardo contributed eight points and eight assists as the Defenders overpowered the Stallions in Boynton Beach. Christina Browder had five points and was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line in the loss.

John I. Leonard 64, Forest Hill 41: Aja Gregg had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Vaida Gonzalez added 22 points, nine rebounds and eight steals, and Kim St. Louis contributed seven points, 12 rebounds, five steals and five assists as the Lancers defeated the Falcons in West Palm Beach.

Palm Beach Lakes 86, Wellington 57: Brittany Wilcox picked up a double-double, socring 22 points and getting 15 rebounds. Ra’shara Simmons also had a double-double, scoring 12 points, getting 10 rebounds and notching 10 assists. Keishmy Ayuso scored 21 points.
