American Heritage rolls to berth in state girls lacrosse championship

American Heritage sophomore Caitlyn Wurzburger is the All-American, but teammate Allegra Catalano looked more like one of the country’s best, scoring four goals in an 11-5 American Heritage win over Vero Beach in the state semifinals Thursday night.

A junior commit to Louisville, Catalano dominated the Fighting Indians (20-5) from the get-go, scoring the game’s first two goals as the Stallions (20-1) raced to an 8-2 halftime lead.

A 2017 All-American as just a sophomore, Wurzburger scored two goals, the second of which capped the victory. Though she had constant pressure throughout, which prevented her from scoring more, Wurzburger often set her teammates up throughout the victory.

Megan Mangines scored twice for the Stallions. Kylie Hazen, Anna Palmisano, and Nicole Scroggie all added goals for Heritage, which advances to face Lake Highland Prep in the state championship match at 9 p.m. Friday. Lake Highland Prep advanced Thursday with a 13-3 rout of Oviedo-Hagerty.

This is a more routine preseason setup. • It’s going to take a little time, the next couple weeks at least, to really define the identity of the...

Marcia Kislinger was dying, taking her last breaths, but her family wasn't there yet. They had just been notified.  They were rushing from their homes to her bedside at Providence St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica. They were worried they wouldn't arrive in time, and the 63-year-old woman would die alone.  As they raced into her room...

These boxers fight with cords wrapped around their fists and crowds love it

Tijjani Zakari stepped into a dusty boxing ring in northern Nigeria and wound thick, threaded cord around his right fist and forearm. For this fighter, the wrap was more battering ram than padded glove.  Zakari squared up to his opponent, squatting low with his bound arm cocked at his side. Less than a minute after the opening whistle, he landed...
