Atlantic, Oxbridge to play for state championships

After its come-from-behind win over Miami High last week, Atlantic joined Oxbridge Academy as Palm Beach County’s representatives in the Florida High School Athletic Association’s state football championships.

The Eagles will play Orlando-Dr. Phillips Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Class 8A title game, while the ThunderWolves face Hollywood-Chaminade Madonna at 10 a.m. in the Class 3A championship game.

Both games will be played at Camping World Stadium. Our preview is below.

Orlando-Dr. Phillips (12-2) vs. Atlantic (12-1): The Eagles are the first Palm Beach County large school to make it through the regional gauntlet against Miami-Dade and Broward teams since Dwyer won a state championship in 2013. Atlantic did so largely on the strength of its defense, particulary its secondary. The Eagles have scored three pick-sixes in their last two games, notching two from Christian Brown and Kenih Lovely in the regional final against Davie-Western, then a 101-yard return from Corey Gammage last week against Miami High. Atlantic has also benefitted from great special-teams play, particularly from return man Oyeh Lurry-Davis, who has seven touchdowns on special teams this season.

Jodie: Atlantic 21-20; Adam: Atlantic 17-14

Hollywood-Chaminade Madonna (10-2) vs. Oxbridge Academy (10-1): This is the matchup most expected in the Class 3A championship game. The Lions and ThunderWolves — ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the final AP state poll — have dominated their postseason opponents. Chaminade-Madonna, which is stocked with Division I college prospects, won its three playoff games by a combined 143-3. The ThunderWolves have been nearly as dominant, outscoring their three postseason opponents by a combined 115-14. Oxbridge has not allowed an offensive touchdown during the postseason, but its defense will be tested by the Lions and senior running back Shaun Shivers. Shivers, who has committed to Auburn, has rushed for 1,807 yards and 23 touchdowns this season. The ThunderWolves have shown balance on offense during the postseason, and junior quarterback Gio Richardson has led the way. Will that momentum carry over Saturday? We’ll see.

Jodie: Chaminade-Madonna 23-16; Adam: Chaminade-Madonna 28-24
