Broncos could lose Shane Ray for the year

The Denver Broncos may lose pass rusher Shane Ray, a former first-round pick, for the rest of the 2017 season.

“Shane Ray had surgery to remove screws from his wrist on Friday,” wrote Zac Stevens of BSN. “He isn’t sure whether he’ll be able to finish the season as he’ll be wearing a cast full time, doesn’t sound promising. He’s meeting with Vance Joseph to discuss the injury and the plan for the rest of his season.”

Ray worked hard to come back in 2017 and was able to make his debut against his hometown Kansas City Chiefs. However, he has struggled to be anywhere close to effective. He has one sack all season. With as badly as this year has gone for the Broncos – though they’ve won the last two weeks – he may be smart not to risk anything and just focus on getting healthy for 2018.

While that’s easy to say from the sidelines, it’s not that easy for Ray to stomach.

“I want to be out there,” Ray said, per Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post. “If I can, I’ll be out there to help the team. But I just got to get healthy and take care of myself and get back to being the Shane that I can be. It’s hard to do that after 3 wrist surgeries. I got to get healthy, man. This sh** hurts.”

He at least has his head around it. If he can’t play and can’t get healthy, that needs to be his focus. Perhaps it’d be different if the Broncos were a serious playoff contender trying to get to the Super Bowl, but they’re not.

This is a new one. Sam Darnold’s alma mater, San Clemente High School (San Clemente, Calif.), is holding a week honoring the former star Tritons quarterback. It isn’t a coincidence it’s falling on the same week as the NFL draft — in fact, that’s precisely why it’s being held. Darnold is expected...
