Willie Taggart: ‘Not addressing any rumors’ putting him at Florida State

With Jimbo Fisher’s hiring at Texas A&M, Florida State’s focus has shifted to Oregon head coach Willie Taggart. Taggart is a Bradenton, Fla. native and led South Florida’s program from 2013-2016, where he steadily molded the Bulls into a contender in the American Athletic Conference. Oregon is currently 7-5 (4-5 Pac-12) in Taggart’s first season with the Ducks.

Unsurprisingly, the hot topic in Eugene during Taggart’s media availability on Friday centered on whether he would indeed depart after a single season and head to Tallahassee. The 41-year-old was mum on those rumors and denied that FSU has reached out to him or his agent.

Willie Taggart was asked if #FSU officials have reached out to him or to his agent about its coaching vacancy. Taggart's response: "No." He added, “I’m still happy, I’m still the coach here.”

While there could be several other directions the Seminoles could go as they look to replace Fisher, Taggart certainly seems to make the most sense for the reasons mentioned above. However, with the Florida State program looking to regain its place among the top ones in the country, it is vital for school president John Thrasher, athletics director Stan Wilcox and the administration to make the correct call.
