PBSO: Two shot at high school football game in Wellington; no shooter in custody

USC without backup guard Derryck Thornton for Pac-12 quarterfinal vs. Oregon State


USC’s bench has been a key to its success this season, but that second unit will be one player light for Thursday night’s Pac-12 tournament quarterfinal against Oregon State. Sophomore guard Derryck Thornton has been ruled out.

Derryck Thornton will not play against Oregon State. He has an upper respiratory infection, per a team spokesman, and is sitting on the bench in a sweatshirt and sweatpants.

Thornton, a transfer from Duke, is averaging 3.8 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game this season. He’s started one game in 2017-18, Feb. 10 at Arizona, and had 7 points with 3 assists, but played only 7 minutes in USC’s regular-season finale against UCLA.

Without Thornton, the Trojans’ main reserve group is down to junior guard Shaqquan Aaron and freshman guard Jordan Usher. Junior forward Bennie Boatwright’s season-ending knee injury in February moved sophomore guard Jonah Mathews into the starting lineup.
