ORLANDO, Fla. — Shane Lee claims scholarship offers from across college football, but the Big Ten presently holds a prominent place among his top options. The blue-chip linebacker from Baltimore mentioned Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State while updating his recruitment Wednesday during a Future 50 event at Under Armour All-America festivities.

“I’d say the Big Ten is giving me the most attention,” Lee told Land of 10.

Along with this trio of marquee conference members, he pointed to Florida State as another program firmly in contention. His scholarship offer sheet also includes schools such as Clemson, LSU and Notre Dame.

Lee, a junior at St. Frances Academy, is considered the No. 1 inside linebacker recruit in the 247Sports 2019 composite rankings. He remains hesitant to dive into too many details regarding his recruitment, and seems intent to extend the process fairly deep into high school.

“I think I want to take things slow,” Lee said. “It can get pretty hectic, so just to try to spread it out and take time. Me and my family will take our trips and try to give every team the respect they gave me.”

Still, it’s apparent he is a strong candidate to ultimately end up on a Big Ten campus. Unsurprisingly, a key aspect of his selection will be relationships.

“I look for the people,” Lee explained. “See how the people treat you — staff, fans, and just the whole community that’s going to be around you if you go to that school.”

When asked which schools stick out at this stage, he first mentioned Michigan and Ohio State. He attended their matchup in Ann Arbor on Nov. 28, and sounds comfortable with both environments.

“Less about football, more about the community feel from Columbus and Ann Arbor,” Lee said. “It just really feels nice and welcoming, so I like that about them.”

He followed with mentions of Florida State and Penn State, where he visited Oct. 21 for the Nittany Lions’ victory over Michigan. Lee was part of a record-setting crowd (110,823) at Beaver Stadium.

It’s the second straight season in which he attended Penn State’s most-hyped home game.

“It was really cool to be there that night, to be honest with you,” he said. “I was there for Ohio State, the whiteout [in 2016] and it just gives me chills every time I step in that stadium.”

Lee communicates with Ohio State “probably the most.” His back-and-forth with the Buckeyes frequently runs through Buckeyes assistant Larry Johnson.

Eventually, he will prioritize the potential for early playing time. Until then, Lee wants to focus on the larger aspects of a college program while identifying finalists.

“It will play a role sometime down the line, but right now I’m just trying to narrow the list,” he said. “It’s happening somewhat now internally, but I’m not going to make it public until I’m for sure.”
