Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting with Chris Kirschner. Today, we talk the latest with one of the nation’s top 5 wide receivers.
Theo Wease Jr. high on Alabama
CARTERSVILLE, Ga. — Alabama was hoping to add a big-bodied wide receiver to its 2018 class but struck out when the state’s No. 1 prospect, Justyn Ross, signed with Clemson over the Crimson Tide.
Theo Wease Jr., a 4-star wide receiver from Allen (Texas) High School, is one of the top big-bodied receivers in the 2019 class. Wease told SEC Country that Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, UCLA and USC are the schools he’s strongly considering at this point.
The 6-foot-3, 194-pound prospect was offered by Alabama last month, and the Tide are strongly in the mix. The biggest reason for that is new wide receivers coach Josh Gattis.
“I’m building a really nice relationship with Coach Gattis,” Wease said. “He keeps it real. That’s what I like. He told me about all of his receivers at Penn State. He’s always [direct messaging] me drills and techniques on how I can get better.
“It’s also Alabama. You have to always show a lot of interest in Alabama just because of the tradition there. I am highly interested.”
Wease said he’s planning on taking an official visit to Tuscaloosa this spring and camping with the Tide this summer. Those visits are going to be of supreme importance to Alabama’s chances at having a legitimate chance at signing Wease because he’s planning on making a decision before his senior season begins.
Ideally, Wease wants to make his decision around August. Once he makes his decision, he said, it will be final. He won’t take visits to other schools.
What Alabama also has going for itself is his relationship with Tide wide receiver signee Jaylen Waddle. Waddle told Wease that when he visits Tuscaloosa it will change his mind on everything he thinks about the school.
“Jaylen and I are basically cousins. We’re really close,” Wease said. “We grew a bond around two years ago and we’ve been tight ever since. We have talked about how he’s a slot receiver and I’m an outside guy and how we can do damage in the SEC.
“In my opinion, he was the best receiver in Texas. Him and [Southern Cal signee] Amon-Ra St. Brown were the top guys in their class, in my opinion. Jaylen is so explosive. He’s little, but he plays like he’s big. Nobody can guard him. He’s too fast. He’s so much fun to watch.”
While it’s good for the Tide to have an in with the nation’s No. 5 wide receiver, that’s not going to be enough to get Wease on board. He’s looking to be comfortable in the city of the school he chooses and wants to have a family-like bond with the coaching staff. Right now, the two teams that seem to have an edge in those categories are Oklahoma, the school he was once committed to, and Texas A&M. Alabama has some catching up to do, but the team will be in good position if he follows through and takes those two trips in the coming months.
Alabama also improved its status with Wease before it even offered him. Back in January, Wease was watching the National Championship Game in which Tua Tagovailoa led the Tide to a comeback victory over Georgia. He saw a total transformation in the Tide’s offense.
“They were throwing that ball around,” he said. “I was loving that. I think Tua is a really good player. I saw him at The Opening [in 2016]. I knew he had the capability to do what he did.”
5-star LB cuts down his list
One of Alabama’s top linebacker targets in the 2019 class, 5-star prospect Nakobe Dean, cut his list of 21 offers to 15. **cue laughter**
Dean told SEC Country in January that if he had to make a top 5, Alabama and LSU would be two schools that would make the cut. Both schools made the coveted top-15 list.
Alabama likely will be a finalist whenever Dean makes his final decision. I’m projecting the Tide to end up signing him when he does make his pick.
