Miami’s rise to No. 2 in the College Football Playoff Top 25 came in a week where it had to rally to beat Virginia at home, with previous No. 2 team Clemson coasting past The Citadel. It gives the Hurricanes a small margin for error, even if they beat Pitt on Saturday and end up losing a close game to the Tigers in the ACC Championship Game a week later. Even a loss to the Panthers on Saturday could still be mitigated by beating Clemson.
While he was not in favor of Clemson being at No. 2 ahead of Miami last week, CBS Sports columnist Tom Fornelli feels that the committee’s decision to put the Hurricanes at No. 2 this week was the correct choice.
“I couldn’t get over the fact that the committee — by its reasoning — felt it was all right to rank Clemson ahead of Miami despite Clemson’s loss to Syracuse because the Tigers had beaten more teams with winning records,” Fornelli wrote after Tuesday night’s unveiling of the updated rankings.
“CFP chair Kirby Hocutt didn’t provide a clear explanation, but all that matters to me is that they fixed the mistake of last week.”
Whatever the explanation is, we could be a step closer to seeing two teams from the same conference in the College Football Playoff for the first time in its four-year history.
