New Florida State football coach Willie Taggart appears to have found his defensive coordinator. According to reports, including from the Tallahassee Democrat’s Wayne McGahee III, Oregon’s Jim Leavitt will join his former boss’s new staff at FSU.

Leavitt was hired by Taggart to become Oregon’s defensive coordinator when the latter was hired in Eugene last year. Under Leavitt’s guidance, the Ducks defense took a large leap from where it was a year prior.

In one year, Jim Leavitt improved Oregon's defense from 113th in yards per play allowed to 30th. Keeping him as defensive coordinator should be Oregon's No.1 priority.

Prior to Oregon, Leavitt was the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Colorado for two seasons, following a stint with the San Francisco 49ers as the linebackers coach.

That came after 12 years as the first head coach at South Florida, where he guided the program from its early stages as a Division 1-AA (now FCS) independent to Conference USA and the Big East. Leavitt’s record in Tampa was 95-57, including a 3-2 record in bowl appearances.
