Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Arkansas Razorbacks recruiting notebook . In this edition, we discuss a new quarterback offer, an in-state target set to visit again, and more.
Jaden Casey caught a flight from California to Arkansas on Thursday morning to visit the Razorbacks. Not long after arriving in Fayetteville, the 2020 quarterback recruit from Calabasas (Calif.) High School had an offer from the Hogs. Arkansas is his first SEC offer and second among Power 5 schools after Indiana offered him last month.
Casey (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) is among the promising quarterback talents in his class. Winning the starting quarterback job at Calabasas, one of the top programs in California, is impressive enough. But Casey also took the opportunity and shined at a young age against stout competition.
In 12 games as a sophomore, he threw for 3,394 yards and 32 touchdowns with 13 interceptions in 12 games. He completed 63 percent of his passes and had 3 rushing scores.
Casey threw for 553 yards and 8 touchdowns last September against Valencia. He became the sixth quarterback to throw for 8 touchdowns in a CIF-Southern Section game, according to USA Today. He did it against a team with at least one defensive back who is destined to play at the Power 5 level.
Getting Casey on campus obviously is a good sign for the Razorbacks’ chances as they look to make a positive impression early in his recruitment. Arkansas’ offer is just the second of many more likely coming his way, so there’s plenty of factors yet to play out.
Arkansas has offered three quarterbacks in the 2020 class. Casey joins T.J. Finley (Ponchatoula, La.) and Hudson Card (Austin, Texas) on that list. The Hogs also are showing interest in 2020 in-state quarterback Jacolby Criswell from Morrilton.
Arkansas in-state target Malik Chavis visited Fayetteville for the second time in three weeks Saturday. The Hogs offered Chavis, who is from Rison, while he was on campus two weeks ago.
Chavis (6-2, 185) plays wide receiver and defensive back. Arkansas is recruiting him to play defense. He’s known for his speed, reporting his 40-yard dash time at 4.43 seconds. He is rated as a 3-star recruit by 247Sports with the Hogs being his lone FBS offer to this point.
Chavis is one of eight in-state recruits in the 2019 class who have Arkansas offers. He should be on commitment watch this weekend.
