Former West Virginia QB calls Rich Rodriguez ‘demeaning,’ ‘selfish’

In the wake of former West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez’s firing from Arizona, a former Mountaineer quarterback took to Twitter to condemn his old coach.

Rodriguez was fired without cause after the Wildcats went 7-6 in 2017; however, he is facing claims of workplace misconduct. Rodriguez, who went 60-26 as the Mountaineers’ coach from 2001-07, tweeted a response to the allegations, denying them. Danny Embick, who played for West Virginia during the 2001 season before transferring to Florida Atlantic, replied to Rodriguez’s post, calling him “demeaning” and “selfish.”

Embick claimed to see Rodriguez verbally and physically harass several people involved with the program. Embick wrote seniors told him, “You should transfer, this guy is crazy!”

“You are a groundless claim” Embick wrote. “I was lied to before I came to WVU. ‘Rich Rod is a great guy.’ Holy sh*t that was a lie. Most demeaning and selfish person I’ve ever been around. Talked down to players, staff, equipment people, women, and even teenage girls assisting with football operations. … Makes me sick I had to deal with you.”

While Embick transferred to FAU, Rodriguez remained at West Virginia until taking the Michigan job ahead of the 2008 season. He lasted three seasons with the Wolverines and became Arizona’s coach in 2012.
