Former Florida player Trey Burton on Notre Dame penalty: ‘We would’ve been in the Natty’

Trey Burton was made aware of a painful bit of knowledge when Notre Dame’s appeal of an NCAA ruling that vacated the Fighting Irish’s victories during the 2012 and 2013 seasons was denied.

The former Florida player, who has been a tight end with the Philadelphia Eagles, used Twitter on Tuesday to express that the Gators would have played for a national title to end the 2012 campaign if Notre Dame wouldn’t have been eligible to face Alabama in the game.

The Gators finished third in the BCS standings, behind Notre Dame (first) and Alabama (second), before the Crimson Tide crushed the Fighting Irish 42-14 in Miami Gardens to claim the national championship. Florida closed that season with an 11-2 record under then-coach Will Muschamp, capped by a loss to Louisville in the Sugar Bowl.

Burton, who played multiple offensive positions for Florida from 2010-13, is free to do what he wants. But it’s likely best for him to forget this possibility as fast as possible. Why torture yourself with a what-if?

Sure, it’s tempting to consider if the Gators could have given the Crimson Tide a competitive game with college football’s largest prize at stake. But Alabama dominated Notre Dame to win the Crimson Tide’s third national title under Nick Saban. And yes, the Gators struggled against Louisville in a 33-23 loss.

Besides, things worked out fine for Burton. He’s fresh off enjoying as Super Bowl victory with the Eagles, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2014.

Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks lost more than their fair share of talent on the perimeter this offseason with Devonté Graham, Svi Mykhailiuk, Malik Newman and Legerald Vick each departing for the NBA.   Such an abundance of productivity isn’t easily replaced, but the arrival of 5-star combo guard Quentin...
