AP: Florida State expects Jimbo Fisher to depart for Texas A&M job

The speculation that Jimbo Fisher will leave Florida State for Texas A&M’s vacant head coaching job grew ever louder on Thursday evening.

According to a report from the Associated Press’s Joe Reedy, Florida State officials expect that Fisher will indeed take the job in College Station, but not before Saturday’s game against Louisiana-Monroe.

A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that they think Fisher will leave Florida State for Texas A&M and that the school has started the process of vetting potential candidates. They spoke on condition of anonymity because neither Texas A&M nor Florida State has publicly discussed details of the Aggies coaching search.

The Seminoles must beat the Warhawks on Saturday, or else their three-and-a-half decade long bowl eligibility streak will end.

Texas A&M has been linked to Jimbo Fisher since the middle of November, when reports that they would fire Kevin Sumlin after the 2017 season surfaced. Sumlin was indeed relieved of his duties on Sunday after five straight fourth-place or worse finishes in the SEC West. However, Fisher has remained tight-lipped regarding any rumors that he would end up as Sumlin’s replacement.

As for Texas A&M’s board of regents, it has “informally approved” a contract for Fisher if he does end up leaving Tallahassee, according to reports from TexAgs.com’s Billy Liucci. Liucci also reported that he expects Fisher to be named to the post on Sunday. If that is the case, Fisher would not coach a potential bowl game if the Seminoles find themselves eligible.
