Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher understands great preparation will be needed to defeat Miami

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher was pleased with how his team overcame adversity and battled back on the road to gain their first victory of the season over Wake Forest, but now, the challenge becomes more difficult this week in a home game against intrastate rival, Miami. Fisher understands that the Seminoles must have a great week of preparation in order to compete against the No. 12 team in the country.

The FSU coach feels the Canes have a tremendous offensive unit, which is led by redshirt junior quarterback Malik Rosier, junior running back Mark Walton and senior wide receiver Braxton Berrios. Each player has individually done their job and collectively, they’re playing well together.

“I think he’s (Rosier) done a great job, kept great composure, very accurate, athletic, gets the ball out of his hand, like he throw he made for the post route, the first one against Duke,” said Fisher talking about the play of Rosier in his Wednesday press briefing, “I mean, that ball just barely got two inches out of his hands, he goes and stands in the pocket and run boots, nakeds quarterback runs.”

He knows his defense will have a challenge in trying to contain Walton because of his versatility on the field. Fisher acknowledges that the talented back can punish you either by running or catching the football, so his defense must be alert and never freelance off the defensive calls or big plays will occur because Miami has a complete offense.

“Well, we’re going to be challenged, that’s for sure. Mark Walton, I remember he was at our camp,” Fisher said, “We all recruited him. He’s a heck of a player. He’s competitive, he’s strong, he’s physical, he’s tough, he can catch the ball.”

Fisher is a big fan of Berrios because he has good football skills. Obviously, he can catch the ball, but his ability to change direction makes him a very instinctive runner. And the FSU coach has told his team not to sleep on Berrios’ punt returning ability because he’s one of the best in the country.

Defensively, Fisher believes the Hurricanes does a great job of mixing their front seven and pass coverages looks all throughout the game. His offensive line must be alert and recognized quickly all of the exotic blitz alignments called by Canes defensive coordinator Manny Diaz or they will put pressure on the quarterback.

The Seminoles host intrastate rival Miami on Oct. 7, with a kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

This is a new one. Sam Darnold’s alma mater, San Clemente High School (San Clemente, Calif.), is holding a week honoring the former star Tritons quarterback. It isn’t a coincidence it’s falling on the same week as the NFL draft — in fact, that’s precisely why it’s being held. Darnold is expected...
