Trump Putin Part 2: If you are wondering about Mar-a-Lago …

On Thursday, President Donald Trump instructed his top national security aide to invite Russian leader Vladimir Putin to visit the United States this fall.

The invite specifically cited Washington, D.C., as the site for the visit and meetings. That said, could Putin’s U.S. itinerary include a stop at the president’s private club in Palm Beach?

Here are five things to keep in mind:

  • Mar-a-Lago typically opens around Halloween, so if Putin’s visit is scheduled before late October, it’s unlikely Mar-a-Lago would be available.
  • The midterm elections on Nov. 6 may well be pivotal in determining when Putin arrives in the United States, and therefore whether a Mar-a-Lago stay could be possible.
  • Trump has filed requests for 78 foreign worker visas for the 2018-2019 season at Mar-a-Lago. The visa requests asked that the workers arrive by Oct. 1.
  • Trump has hosted two world leaders at Mar-a-Lago, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, on two occasions, and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
  • The first Abe stay at Mar-a-Lago, in February 2017, took place after Trump and the Japanese PM first met at the White House. So, there would be precedent for Trump to host Putin at both the White House and the Southern White House on the same visit.
