Trump News Today: Housing chief Ben Carson gets $31,000 table he didn’t ask for

ALERT: Roads near Mar-a-Lago will be closed beginning at Friday at 6 a.m. in advance of the president’s arrival Friday evening.

Roads are expected to be closed through Saturday, according to a traffic alert issued this morning by the Town of Palm Beach.

Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes. It is recommended that all household staff, landscaper maintenance companies, pool companies, etc. adjust their schedules accordingly so as not to spend an unnecessary amount of time in traffic due to the closure.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued an alert to pilots on Monday warning of VIP movement March 2-3. Trump’s 2020 campaign is also hosting a fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago on Saturday night.

The president is expected to arrive at Palm Beach International Airport on Friday, after attending the funeral of televangelist Bill Graham.

It will be the president’s 14th visit to Palm Beach.

UPDATE 12:14 p.m.: Housing Secretary and Palm Beach Gardens resident Ben Carson got a pricey new custom dining room set for his office in Washington, DC. The $31,000 price was well above the $5,000 redecorating budget set by Congress. The staffer who ordered the set did not get approval to exceed the limit and did not get Carson’s approval before ordering it.

UPDATE 10:41 a.m.:  In a tweet posted at 9:34 a.m. the president slammed his Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, for asking the Justice Department’s inspector general to investigate possible abuses of the Foreign Surveillance Intelligence Act, also known as FISA, during the 2016 election.

Sessions's announced on Tuesday that he would ask the Justice Department’s Inspector General to look into how the department obtains FISA warrants.

The president has accused Obama administration officials of misusing their FISA authority to wrongly surveil members of his transition team.

Valeche: What if the county didn’t provide security on Trump trips?

Palm Beach County taxpayers have paid millions to provide additional security and roadway management during President Trump’s many visits to his Mar-a-Lago estate.

The county provides the costly assistance under the assumption that it will be reimbursed. Getting its money back from the federal government, however, has proven to be laborious and time-consuming, prompting a blunt question from an unlikely source.

“What if we just say no?” Commissioner Hal Valeche asked Tuesday during a County Commission meeting.

Rep. Brian Mast hopes to raise ‘assault weapons’ ban with Trump

Most Republicans have not embraced the call by freshman Rep. Brian Mast, R-Palm City, for a ban on “assault weapons” in the wake of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre in Parkland, but Mast said Tuesday that some of his GOP colleagues have privately quizzed him on how the proposal is going over with his constituents.

Mast said he also hopes to raise the issue with President Donald Trump on Wednesday, when the president hosts a bipartisan group of lawmakers at the White House to discuss gun legislation and other measures in response to the 17 deaths in Parkland.
