UPDATE 3:40 p.m.: About 35 Donald Trump supporters stood near the Southern Boulevard Bridge on Friday afternoon, waiting for Trump to drive by in his motorcade.
Many said they hadn’t been following recent headlines too closely, but some said they had heard about Hope Hicks, the White House communications director who will reportedly resign, becoming the fourth communications director to leave the job in the last year.
“I don’t think it has to do with Trump,” said Paula Magnuson, a Trump supporter from Palm Beach Gardens. “I think it has to do with the job.”
Magnuson said she thinks Hicks and past communication directors were overloaded with the demands of the job. “I think they’re leaving because they get burned out so quickly,” Magnuson said.
Mary Smith, a Trump supporter from Hypoluxo wearing red, white and blue Trump socks, said she hadn’t heard about Hicks because she doesn’t watch much news.
“I don’t know who to believe or not,” Smith said. She said Trump’s presidency has been the first time she has “really been interested in politics.”
“Politics to me has always been boring,” she said.
Smith said she began liking politics the first time she saw Trump speak. Someone accused Trump of calling women dogs, she said, and Smith remembers Trump responding by saying “only Rosie O’Donnell”.
“That’s when I knew it was gonna be a fun time.”
Magnuson, however, said she had been keeping up with recent news. She said the FBI’s investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia is a “political ploy” and said liberals are using the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting as an excuse to “take guns away.”
“The lefties are worse than McCarthyism,” Smith said. “They’re so much more invasive.”
