FHP report details whether trooper acted properly in fatal shooting of Delray man

Trump news today: President calls school deputy “coward”

UPDATE 11:45 a.m.: In a tense news conference this morning, Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said Deputy Scot Peterson, a school resource deputy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, was in a position to enter the area where the gunman was shooting but instead stayed outside. According to Israel, Peterson should have  “went in. Addressed the killer. Killed the killer.”

Israel described what he saw on a school secruity video of Peterson’s actions during the shooting.

“What I saw was a deputy arrive … take up a position and he never went in,” the sheriff said. “There are no words. I mean these families lost their children. We lost coaches,” Israel said.

Peterson resigned, and subsequently retired Thursday.

The president also slammed Peterson during an interview with Fox News before heading to CPAC on Friday. Trump called Peterson a “coward” and said “he certainly did a poor job. There is no question about that.”

During his speech at CPAC, the president again blamed Peterson.

“You have one guard and he did not turn out to be good,” Trump said. “He was not a credit to law enforcement. That I can tell you.”

Peterson could not be reached for comment.

The president pressed again for arming “gun adept” teachers and school staff. A well-trained, armed teacher “would have shot the hell out of him before he knew what happened.”

UPDATE 10:07 a.m.: The White House has released excerpts from the president’s speech at CPAC.

“When we declare our schools to be gun free it just puts our students in more danger...”

UPDATE 8:49 a.m.: More tweets from the president this morning.

UPDATE 7:05 a.m.: The president began tweeting today at 6:28 a.m. It appears his attention has shifted away from guns and back to building the wall.
