Things to do: Boat safety class, classic rock in Gardens


Enjoy live music at an outdoor festival or at ‘Sounds of the City.’


Palm Beach Power Squadron’s safe boating course is this weekend at 1125 Old Dixie Highway, a half-mile south of Northlake Boulevard. The class from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a break for lunch covers knowing your boat, fueling procedures, navigation rules, anchoring, emergencies and other topics.

There will be a review and 60-question exam starting at 2 p.m. Sunday. Passing the test earns you a Florida Boating Safety Education ID card, which is required by the state for everyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, operating a vessel with a motor of 10 hp or more. The course is $30 per person, but those 12 to 19 years old will be admitted free when accompanied by a parent.

Take part in a kayaking obstacle course and paddle boarding, or just enjoy the live music, food trucks and native plant sale at the NatureScaping outdoor festival 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at John D. MacArthur State Park, 10900 Jack Nicklaus Drive, in North Palm Beach. The festival is free.

Enjoy live music and dancing to the tunes of an 8-piece brass band for Sounds of the City on Saturday evening. Solid Brass will play classic rock from the 1960s to 1980s from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Veterans Plaza Amphitheater, 10500 N. Military Trail. Limited seating is provided, or you can bring your own. The event is free. Guests can buy refreshments from Cabo Flats.

Come early for a Meet & Greet with GardensArt artist Henriett Anri Michel, whose oil & acrylic painting exhibit titled “Digesting my Memories” is on display in the City Hall lobby. Doors open at 6 p.m.
