Letters: If guilty, judge should serve time

If guilty, judge

should serve time

How despicable that a judge had appearances of conspiring with his wife to take funds from the elderly, the incapacitated, and disabled seniors. This is not “taking,” this was stealing. (“Judge Martin Colin had a hand in his wife’s guardianship cases, state says,” Sunday)

The judge should be removed from the bench, and he and his wife should find future comfort in a jail cell if the complaints are substantiated by the Office of Public and Professional Guardians.

Primaries should

be open to all

I felt the pain of the letter writer who attempted to vote in the recently held primaries. I also attempted to vote 20 years ago, as a newly transplanted Florida resident, as an independent. Such an archaic, nonsensical law.

There is good news, however. The organization Florida Fair and Open Primaries is trying to add a constitutional amendment to the election ballot to change Florida primary elections from a closed political party system to a voter-nominated top-two open primary system.

DeSantis comment

just more divisiveness

In response to the letter, “Comment referred to policies, not race” (Monday):

Really, you think that Ron DeSantis could not have used a different word in his response to Andrew Gillum’s winning of the Democrat’s primary for the governorship of Florida? The writer’s reply was just GOP-speak for every issue that involves the party’s racial bias.

We’re not buying it, as we’ve seen what has occurred with the current president’s inflammatory speech and his party’s refusal to speak out against his divisive rhetoric. It seems to me that it’s just the same willful ignorance that has given us this “Divider-in-Chief.”

Keep at it — it’s giving the Democratic Party faithful even more reason to show up at the polls in November.

No such phrase as

‘monkey this up’

I’ve heard the phrases “monkey around” and “mess this up,” but I’ve never heard the expression “monkey this up.” Too bad DeSantis didn’t run his phrase by Roseanne Barr before he said it.

Moon landing was

U.S. achievement

In the new movie “First Man,” about Neil Armstrong, the planting of the American flag on the moon’s surface was intentionally omitted. Actor Ryan Gosling explained that the movie’s producers viewed the lunar landing as a “human achievement” and not just an America achievement.

It is hard to imagine a more singular American achievement than landing men on the moon. American money, engineering, astronauts, technical expertise, know-how and imagination were the sole forces responsible for achieving the lunar landing.

This was not a project imagined and supported by the United Nations. It was not the international space station. It was an American achievement from the time President Kennedy proposed it until its successful conclusion.

American leftists deny American greatness and view America as an undeserving nation. If the movie had been about Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, there is absolutely no doubt that American leftists would view that as a Soviet Russian achievement and not a human achievement.

One can only imagine what other facts “First Man” has omitted or changed.

Letters: Bear’s Club payoff must be stopped

Bear’s Club payoff must be stopped When is the word “forever” a finite period of time? When it is used in context with influential lobbyists and developers in Palm Beach County, that’s when. The uber-wealthy community of Bear’s Club in Jupiter desires to reverse a perpetual conservation easement protecting a 15-acre nature...
POINT OF VIEW: Time to talk suicide prevention among Florida’s youth

As youth and families across the state settle into the new school calendar and fall quickly approaches, it is easy to be caught up in the early mornings, after-school activities, late-night homework and weekend errands. Yet, as we go about our routines, every 32 hours one of Florida’s most valuable citizens commits suicide. Every 32 hours a child...

Opinion: The broken pieces of Middle East peace

This week marks the 40th anniversary of the Camp David accords — the high-water mark of Middle East peacemaking. How far we have fallen since then. It makes you weep. Rather than a breakthrough, Israelis and Palestinians seem to be inching closer and closer to a total breakdown. Without some dramatic advance, there is a real chance that whatever...
Opinion: Eleventh-hour slander

After several days of showboating and judicial hazing, Democrats pulled out their biggest weapon against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh — a letter from an anonymous woman claiming sexual misconduct in high school. There are no words — except perhaps desperate, scurrilous and embarrassing to anyone with a conscience and a grown-up...
