UPDATE: Man buried after sand tunnel collapses at Florida beach ID’d


Update 1:25 p.m.: A man who was buried under a pile of sand while digging a tunnel at the beach has been identified as Lee Goggin. 

His sister posted a message to Facebook pleading for his recovery: 

The Dallas Morning News reported that Goggin lives in Irving, Texas, and is a personal trainer. He was in the St. Augustine area while on vacation with his family. 

Original story: A man digging a tunnel near a Florida beach was taken to the hospital after sand collapsed and buried him.

St. Johns Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene around 1:40 p.m. Sunday off A1A in Crescent Beach, south of St. Augustine. 

They had to remove 2 to 3 feet of sand before digging him out. According to the Dallas News, 

He was taken to Flagler Hospital in critical condition.
