NEW: Florida gets poor report card for pre-K through 12 education


While Florida ranked as one of the best states for higher education, the same thing can’t be said about pre-K through 12th grade. 

Florida came in 40th, according to U.S. News & World Report, which based its findings on high school graduation rates and how many children are able to get an early start from pre-K.

The magazine cited Florida’s low score to the fact that only 14 percent of students were ready for college and 43 percent of students graduate from high school.

Florida sat among other low-educated states, including West Virginia, Oklahoma, South Carolina, New Mexico and Nevada.

The magazine’s top five best states were Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Vermont and Connecticut. 

On Wednesday, Gov. Rick Scott addressed the fact that Florida ranked first in the nation for higher education, but did not mention the poor score for grades pre-K through 12.
