NEW: Trump’s Italy ambassador is Florida man, former GOP finance chair


President Donald Trump will nominate a Florida resident and former Republican Party finance chair to be his ambassador to Italy, the White House announced late Monday.

Lewis M. Eisenberg of Vero Beach also will be nominated as Trump’s ambassador to the tiny Republic of San Marino, a position Eisenberg will “serve concurrently and without additional compensation,” the White House said.

News of Trump’s plan to nominate Eisenberg as U.S. ambassador to Italy has been circulating for months, with USA Today including the wealthy financier under the headline, “President Trump’s ambassador picks sit in limbo.”

The former chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey served on Trump’s inaugural committee, and donated more than $35,000 to Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016, according to the Federal Election Commission.

Eisenberg’s nomination now faces a Senate confirmation.

The Treasure Coast resident is one of several nominations announced Monday night by the White House, including:

  • Ronald L. Batory of New Jersey: Federal Railroad Administration administrator
  • Susan Combs of Texas: Assistant secretary of the Interior for Policy, management and budget
  • Robert P. Kadlec of New York: Assistant secretary of Health and Human Services for preparedness and response
  • Stephen B. King of Wisconsin: Ambassador to the Czech Republic
  • Randal Quarles of Colorado: Vice chairman for supervision of the Federal Reserve System for a four-year term, and member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve expiring Jan. 31, 2032
  • Mary Kirtly Waters of Virginia: Assistant Secretary of State, Legislative Affairs

“Lewis M. Eisenberg of Florida to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Italian Republic, and to serve concurrently and without additional compensation as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of San Marino. Mr. Eisenberg is a prominent American financier, investor, and philanthropist. Co-founder and managing partner of Ironhill Investments in New York, he has a record of engaging with State and local governments on complex issues. Mr. Eisenberg was the Chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for six years and was named a Founding Board Member of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, where he chaired its 9/11 Victims’ Families and Transportation Advisory Councils. He is an Emeritus Member of Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management Advisory Council and Life Member of the Cornell University Council. He earned a B.A. at Dartmouth College and a M.B.A. at Cornell Johnson School of Business.”
