In one corner of the Tampa fairgrounds, President Donald Trump will rally supporters in favor of GOP gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis. In the another corner, real estate magnate Jeff Greene, Democratic candidate for governor, will lead supporters in a “Stand Up to Trump” rally.
Ironically, the fervor is somewhat premature as DeSantis, a northeast Florida congressman, and Greene still have to defeat intra-party rivals in the Aug. 28 primary to even have a shot at winning the governor’s mansion in the Sunshine State.
But supporters of Trump and Greene are all in.
A soaking rain did little to damper spirits of hundreds of Trump supporters, reports GateHouse Florida’s Zac Anderson.
Anderson reports Trump supporters gathered inside the rally building at the fairgrounds are heckling CNN and the network’s White House correspondent, Jim Acosta.
Earlier, Anderson spoke to one Trump supporter who told him: “He’s our messenger and we listen to him, that’s all we do. I listen to our president and follow his agenda … If he says he’s going to turn the moon purple, I believe him.”
Palm Beach Post reporter George Bennett also reports that Trump supporter Sylvia Hart of Venice is celebrating her birthday at the rally tonight. Hart told Bennett she is a Democrat who plans to switch to the Republican Party but missed the deadline for doing so for the Aug. 28 primary.
Bennett reports that Greene has arrived and earned some media air time.
Bennett also reported that a fairgrounds employee told an anti-Trump protester to move to a designated protest area. The protester was holding a sign with images of Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin that reads “Putin Won It … He’s never been our friend.”
