Miami-Dade officer shoots, kills gunman at Walmart

A Miami-Dade police officer was shot “multiple times” while working security at a Walmart on Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

Manuel Gonzalez was off-duty when he was struck by bullets and returned fire to kill the gunman in the parking lot, according to the Miami Herald.

Gonzalez was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

“At close range, he was able to survive multiple gunshot wounds,” Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez told the Miami Herald. “He’s in great spirits.”

The incident unfolded when Gonzalez was asked to investigate a potential shoplifter at the store, which is west of Interstate 95 off Northwest 79th Street. When Gonzalez confronted the man, he pulled out a gun and began shooting, the Miami Herald reported.

Gonzalez is married and has two children, NBC Miami reported.

The man who was shot dead was later identified as 54-year-old David Facen, a convicted murderer who had recently got out of prison for serving time for aggravated battery with a firearm among other charges.
