Staff Note: The sheriff’s office originally reported the woman who was arrested Friday afternoon was 94 years old. She is 53.
A 53-year-old woman was arrested midday Friday after she allegedly tried to lie in the road in front of the car carrying of the wife of Chinese president Xi Jinping, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.
The incident marked the sixth arrest tied to protests in the area in two days.
The motorcade transporting Madame Peng Liyuan and first lady Melania Trump to Mar-a-Lago after a visit to the Bak Middle School of the Arts in West Palm Beach was at Southern Boulevard and Lake Avenue when the woman “jumped into the middle of the road” in front of Peng’s car, sheriff’s spokeswoman Teri Barbera said.
Barbera said the obstruction nearly caused a motorcycle deputy to crash while other deputies had to run into the roadway to hustle the woman out of the way of the motorcade. The woman, identified as Chun Yan Wang, was charged with obstructing a roadway.
The two first ladies arrived at Bak around 11 a.m. and visited for about an hour.
Five people were arrested Thursday after they allegedly tried to block Chinese president Xi’s motorcade as the Chinese leader arrived at the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa, where demonstrators both supporting and protesting the Chinese regime had gathered. Those five never got into the roadway, Barbera said.
