Prescribed burn planned today in Hobe Sound

The Florida Forest Service, Okeechobee District plans a prescribed burn today to reduce the wildfire risk for the Tanah Keeta Scout Reservation.

The prescribed burn will consist of approximately 80 acres of palmetto and grass vegetation along the south edge of Jonathan Dickenson State Park and on the Loxahatchee River.

Prescribed fires are only conducted when weather parameters are suitable.

Prescribed burning mimics natural fire cycles to restore healthy forests and natural communities, reduces undergrowth that accumulates over time, and decreases the potential for destructive wildfire. Burned lands experience an increase in native wildflowers, birds and other wildlife.

After the prescribed fire, the burn area becomes a discovery center for the scouts at the camp. With the first rainfall, the scouts can watch the new sprouts emerged from the ash enriched soil. As the animals enjoy the buffet of new sprouts, the scouts can identify scat and animal tracks.
