Workers at the South Florida Fair on Monday began assembling the Midway Sky Eye, the largest portable observation wheel in North America.

Once completed, it will tower 155 feet above the midway and stand twice as tall as the previous large Ferris wheel featured at the fair. It’s so tall that it required special clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration because of its position under the Palm Beach International Airport flight path.

The South Florida Fair opens Friday and runs through Jan. 28. The rides open at 5 p.m. Thursday for the fair’s annual Ride-A-Thon.
