PHOTOS: Lion Country Safari welcomes baby giraffe to herd

A baby giraffe recently joined the herd at Lion Country Safari.

The female calf was born at 6 p.m. Feb. 4, the drive-through wildlife park said in a news release. Guests in the park at the time were able to sit in their vehicles to watch the birth.

This is one leggy baby: She was 132 pounds and 5-feet-5-inches tall when born.

The baby was named Kimberlina by the staff, in honor of two members of Lion Country Safari’s staff who are “exceptionally passionate and dedicated to giving (the) giraffe extraordinary care,” the park said. Kimberlina, a type of rose, also follows the plant-themed names of the calf’s mother, Willow, and grandmother, Ayanna.

Kimberlina and Willow can be seen in the park’s maternity area.

In addition to Kimberlina’s birth, Lion Country Safari on Valentine’s Day will celebrate the birth of the calf’s father, 13-year-old Cupid. He has a heart-shaped spot on the right side of his neck and will get special treats in the giraffe feeding yard throughout Feb. 14.

Lion Country Safari celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.
