Boynton Beach police officers are known for rescuing injured drivers or crime victims, but beached manatees?
Add that to the list.
Marine unit and road patrol officers helped the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission last week in rescuing a male manatee.
Residents of the Hypoluxo Harbor Club on the Intracoastal Waterway called for help after noticing the manatee, according to Boynton Beach Police. The club is just north of Boynton Beach city limits.
The manatee became stuck from high tides.
Someone put up a tent around the manatee to protect its skin from sun exposure, which is a danger to the animals because they could dry out, said Gregg Koch, a Boynton marine unit officer.
FWC took photos and measured the manatee. Crews planned to put it on a trailer and take it to a doctor to make sure it was healthy but one on site felt it unnecessary to do so after inspecting it.
A group of about 10 moved the manatee by pulling a blue tarp underneath it and let it go into the water to the sound of onlookers’ cheers.
