A new Starbucks could be coming to the plaza that now houses Trader Joe’s in Wellington.
Two new buildings, including one with a Starbucks drive-through and retail space, are planned for the Village Green Center shopping plaza in Wellington. The other proposed outparcel would be a three-story medical office building, according to documents filed with Wellington’s Planning, Zoning and Building Department by plaza owner Ward Real Estate of Wellington.
Ward has applied to change its approved site plan, which now includes plans for a bank where the Starbucks would be a general office building where the medical office building would be. Village Planning and Zoning Director Bob Basehart said his staff is recommending approval of those changes, adding that few banks are being built right now.
“There’s no point in holding up its ability to be developed by insisting it stay a bank,” he said.
Village Green Center features two buildings running north to south with tenants including Trader Joe’s, an Xfinity store, a nail spa, Jimmy Brooklyn’s Pizza Parlor, Capitol Lighting and Tropical Smoothie Cafe. There are four outparcels: McDonald’s, PDQ, Taco Bell and Buffalo Wild Wings.
The building that would house the Starbucks and retail space would be on the south side of the plaza in an open space occasionally used around holidays by fireworks and Christmas tree vendors. The medical office building would be where now there is a large grassy space just north of the plaza.
The plans will go before Wellington’s Planning, Zoning and Adjustments Board at its Nov. 8 meeting. The plans then will be scheduled for a future village council meeting.
Should the plans be approved, the new Starbucks would join two others in the Mall at Wellington Green and a nearby plaza, along with the Barnes & Noble cafe, which serves Starbucks coffee. Two other Starbucks locations are within a short driving distance of the mall area.

When the Trader Joe’s grocery store opened in Village Green Center in 2014, dozens of people lined up to be among the first to enter.
