JMC offsite urgent care center would be the fifth in five years

JMC is the largest employer in Jupiter

Jupiter Medical Center, the town’s largest employer, plans to open its fifth off-site urgent care center in five years — this one in Stuart.

The 4,000-square-foot facility is scheduled to open this summer in the Baron Shoppes on 2650 SE Federal Highway. The center will have about six exam rooms, x-ray equipment and lab services, said Judy Magalhaes, vice president of ambulatory care at JMC.

“We are meeting customer demand for less costly and more efficient medical services,” said Magalhaes.

Nationally, up to about 27 percent of all emergency room visits could be treated at an alternative care clinic. The primary conditions that could be treated at these sites include minor acute illnesses, strains, and fractures. Using the urgent care centers would cut national medical costs about $4.4 billion annually, according to a study by the National Institutes of Health.

JMC opened its latest urgent care center in October on the first floor of the new JMC Mount Sinai New York Plaza – formerly known as the Bank of America Centre – at 625 North Flagler Dr. in West Palm Beach.

JMC opened its first medical clinic in April 2013 in a former Blockbuster store in Abacoa Plaza, on the northwest corner of Donald Ross Road and Military Trail.

A year later, JMC opened an urgent care center on the north side of Indiantown Road, east of Center Street.

The Palm Beach Gardens center opened in June of last year at 3250 PGA Boulevard, across from The Gardens Mall.

The latest urgent care expansion comes four months after JMC presented plans for a $123 million expansion. A larger cancer institute, an intensive care unit for heart patients and infants, and a stroke program are planned. The plan is the largest expansion since JMC opened in 1979 on Military Trail.

A portion of the expansion, a proposed 57,000-square-foot expansion of the JMC Foshay Cancer Center, is scheduled to go before the Jupiter town council Feb. 20.

The Stuart urgent care center is scheduled to be open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. and on Sundays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

About 1,650 persons are employed at JMC, not including 637 physicians. About 640 volunteers donate their time at JMC.

JMC is a not-for-profit 327-bed regional medical center consisting of 207 private acute-care hospital beds and 120 long-term care, sub-acute rehabilitation and hospice beds.
