New Jupiter dog park could bring leash regulations

New dog park in Jupiter to open early next year

Jupiter dog park is on Indiantown Road

Should dogs require leashes at Jupiter’s newest dog park?

That’s the question scheduled for a preliminary vote at the Tuesday, Dec. 5 town council meeting at 7 p.m.

The new 13-acre Cinquez Park is scheduled to open early next year.

Besides a dog park — with separate areas for big and little dogs — the $3 million plan park plans call for a playground, treehouse, natural area and walking paths.

Dogs are now allowed to walk without a leash in Jupiter parks as long as they are under voice control, which means they respond to voice orders from their owners.

The proposal calls for requiring that dogs be on a leash when they are in dog parks in Jupiter. Once the dogs enter the fence-in areas designated for dogs, they can be taken off their leash.

“This is due to the variety of uses proposed on the site and the potential for conflicts with dogs off leash which has increased over the years according to Code Compliance,” according to town records.

The leash proposal has nothing to do with Dog Beach, the 2-mile stretch north of Marcinski Road where dogs are allowed to roam without leashes.

Cinquez Park includes a 2-acre wetlands area and will have about 70 parking spaces.

The work is being done by Lake Worth-based West Construction.

Cinquez Park is planned to be free and open to the public. The park is scheduled to be open daily from 7:30 a.m. to sunset.
