As Wellington tries to get more kayaks launching into Lake Wellington, the village is launching two free evening events to help draw attention to the lake and its recreational opportunities.
The Family Fun Nights on March 20 and April 26 are in addition to a new recently announced series of Lakeside Family Fun Days, which will be Feb. 17, March 10 and April 14.
Wellington community programs manager Michelle Garvey told The Palm Beach Post last month that the events are designed to draw attention to the lake, which she called Wellington’s “hidden gem.”
The Family Fun Nights will be themed, with Mardi Gras on March 30 and Lei’d Back Luau on April 26.
On Mardi Gras night, there will be a live jazz band, face painting, a balloon artist, food trucks and lawn games. At 7 p.m. there will be a Mardi Gras boat parade along Lake Wellington organized by Jack Brownson, the man behind the Wellington holiday boat parade. Boaters who want to take part must have a non-motorized vessel and should contact Brownson at email@example.com for more details.
For the April 26 luau night, there will be a 5:30 p.m. performance by Hawaiian and Tahitian dancers who will teach the hula to attendees. There also will be face painting, food trucks and a balloon artist.
The village hopes to raise awareness of the lake, which is accessible by walking between Wellington’s Aquatics Complex and Community Center. The lake stretches from near South Shore Boulevard to the south to Wellington Trace on the north, with Forest Hill Boulevard as an eastern border and Big Blue Trace to the west.
“We want to bring the attention to the lake that it deserves,” Garvey said, adding that by having the events, Wellington hopes to determine how much demand there is for more activities along the lake.
