The fire was reported around 3 p.m. at the Casa Brera Apartments near Hypoluxo Road and Military Trail, according to a Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman. Smoke was visible several blocks away.

The smoke and flames were coming from a third floor balcony of an apartment, Fire Rescue Capt. Albert Borroto said. The crews contained the fire to the apartment.

After being told that the family pets were still inside, the firefighters found the two cats and brought them to safety, Borroto said.

The Red Cross responded to assist the four displaced residents, including three children, plus four pets.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
