UPDATE: Boca Mayor Susan Haynie’s court arraignment today canceled

Update Thursday at 6:30 a.m.: Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie’s arraignment hearing Thursday was canceled.

The hearing hasn’t yet been rescheduled. Haynie pleaded not guilty to the four felony and three misdemeanor charges.

Original story: The first court hearing in Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie’s public corruption case is this morning.

It isn’t clear whether Haynie will be at the arraignment, a formal reading of criminal charges. Haynie is charged with four felonies and three misdemeanors.

Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Glenn Kelley will preside over the 8:30 a.m. arraignment at the main courthouse in West Palm Beach.

The hearing comes just a week after Haynie’s defense lawyer, Bruce Zimet, filed a motion to dismiss all of the charges against her, partly because a state law that governs elected official misconduct changed about two years ago.

Haynie is accused of not reporting $335,000 in earnings on mandatory state forms since 2014. About one-third of that income was from Boca Raton real estate moguls James and Marta Batmasian. Haynie allegedly voted favorably on four Batmasian projects while her family businesses collected money from the couple, the State Attorney’s Office reports.

She faces up to 23 years in prison.

The two-term mayor was suspended from office by Gov. Rick Scott, and dropped her campaign for Palm Beach County Commission. Haynie still is holding on to her seat as mayor, which she can return to if she clears her name before the term expires in March 2020.
