About 500 gallons of sewage leak into suburban Boynton pond

About 500 gallons of sewage overflowed from a lift station in Lake Charleston in suburban Boynton Beach on Tuesday, a report from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection said.

Officials say that at about 3:30 p.m., 300 gallons of the sewage was spilled into a nearby retention pond, while the remainder spilled onto the ground.

The cause is listed in the report as “weather conditions.”

Lime has been applied on land affected by the spill, and an aerator was installed in the retention pond, the report said.

Officials say they have posted signs prohibiting swimming and fishing in the area and will monitor water-quality samples from the pond.
