Man throws girlfriend out of hotel window near Vero Beach, cops say

A 30-year-old man was arrested after authorities said he threw his girlfriend out of a hotel window during a drunken fight.

The incident happened just before 1 a.m. Sunday at the Vero Beach Inn and Suites, just east of Interstate 95.

Indian River County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the hotel by Joseph W. Smallegan, who said his girlfriend punched the window out, according to an Indian River County Sheriff’s Office report.

When deputies arrived, the man and woman were both very intoxicated from drinking, the report states.

The woman had a deep cut on the top of her head and another on her right heel.

She told them she was fighting with her boyfriend of two years, whom she lives with in Naples, when he cornered her in the room. After she pushed him away, he punched her in the face, grabbed her by the neck and threw her through the window, the report states.

A hotel employee standing by the pool told deputies that she heard glass shatter and then saw the woman outside.

Smallegan denied throwing his girlfriend and said they were fighting over her alleged drinking problem when she tossed her shoe and broke the window, according to the report.

The woman was taken to the hospital to get stitches. Smallegan was sent to jail on an aggravated battery/domestic violence charge.
