Loxahatchee Groves sees new council member; 3 qualify for open seat

The Loxahatchee Groves Town Council has a new member after qualifying for two open seats closed at noon Tuesday.

Joyce Batcheler will occupy Seat 3, currently occupied by Councilman Ryan Liang. Three people qualified for Seat 1, including incumbent Ronald Jarriel and challengers Neil O’Neal III and Phillis Maniglia. The election for that seat will be March 13.

Batcheler serves on the town’s Unified Land Development Committee. She had not previously run for town council. She joins Councilman Todd McLendon and Mayor David Browning, whose terms expire in 2019, and Councilman David DeMarois, whose term expires in 2020. Each council member serves a three-year term.

Batcheler will be sworn in at the March 20 town council meeting, after the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections certifies the March 13 election results.

In a town of about 3,400 people, 461 voted in the 2017 election, and about double that number voted the year before that.

Loxahatchee Groves has one voting precinct at Palms West Presbyterian Church, 13689 Okeechobee Blvd.

A previous version of this article incorrectly reported that Joyce Batcheler will be sworn in at the town council’s Jan. 16 meeting.
