Sixteen Jupiter High students are showing their work

The art show is at Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter

Jupiter Community High School junior Destiny Zuniga expects a big boost in confidence when she joins local high school photographers for a National Society of Arts and Letters master class taught by nationally-known photographers.

“When I show my work it empowers me. My art work is pure. It is me,” said the Jupiter resident.

This will be the first time Jupiter High students have participated in the NSAL show at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

About 60 JHS, Boca Raton High School, Dreyfoos School of the Arts and Pembroke Pines Charter High students are scheduled to participate in the day-long master class on Saturday.

The student’s work then goes on display through March 23 at the FAU campus in Boca Raton.

Admission is free.

“Some students are nervous. Some are excited. There’s a lot of energy,” said Sarah Knudtson, a photography teacher at JHS.

The Jupiter High students will compete against their peers from the three other high schools for Overall Best in Show, Best in Show (at each school) and eight other monetary award categories.

“I’m expecting to see a lot of variations. I expect to learn a lot,” said Eric Rowland, 18, a JHS senior who lives in Jupiter.

This year’s master class will be conducted by Cathaleen Curtiss, director of photography for The Buffalo News and a former White House news photographer. She will be joined by her husband, Mickey Osterreicher, an award-winning photojournalist and General Counsel for the National Press Photographers Association.

“The students can share their ideas, concepts and learn new ideas from the instructors and the other students,” said Knudtson.

The NSAL Florida East Coast Chapter was chosen in 2016 by the national organization to be the first chapter in the country to create a High School Pilot Project in Photography at Boca Raton High School.

The NSAL Florida East Coast Chapter is a non-profit, volunteer organization committed to raising money and awareness of its efforts to promote public interest in the creative arts by working to find talented young people at the beginning of their careers.

The organization also provides scholarships and competitions in Art, Dance, Drama, Literature, Music and Musical Theatre for young artists to advance their career and creative opportunities.
