Medical offices and an urgent care facility could replace a dive shop on Northlake Boulevard in the shadows of I-95, if Palm Beach Gardens approves a pitch from a doctor.
Divers Direct closed its only Palm Beach County store, at 4074 Northlake Blvd., on Oct. 30, according to a recorded phone message. Jason Merrick, vice president of marketing, said the shop closed because the building, just west of I-95, had been sold.
Julissa Holdings bought the 1.4-acre retail property from Holiday Diver for $3.1 million in July, according to Palm Beach County property records.
Divers Direct is looking for space for another store in Palm Beach County but hasn’t found one yet, Merrick said.
“We would prefer to stay in that area. It really just depends on the right location.”
Customers who left their gear in the store to be serviced could call customer service to schedule a time to pick it up or have it delivered. Divers Direct has five other stores in South Florida, the closest one in Fort Lauderdale.
Julissa Holdings is registered to the Shikara Family. Dr. Mazin Shikara said he plans to move the Palm Beach Gardens doctor’s office of Medical Consultants of Florida 400 yards east from the corner of Northlake and Military to the former Divers Direct.
About 90 percent of patients live within 5 miles, Shikara said.
“It has visibility. It has ease of access,” he said.
Shikara has asked the city to use the first floor for medical offices and to add a second floor for professional offices. About 5,000 square feet on the first floor will be improved for an urgent care in the north end of the building, with the medical offices to the south, according to a development application.
The second floor offices will be about 7,500 square feet.
The administrative offices of Medical Consultants of Florida will move there from Jupiter, Shikara said.
A large physical therapy group that Shikara declined to name is committed to the offices, and neurology and orthopedic doctors are interested, he said. Shikara expects it will be 8 to 10 months from the time construction starts until doctors start seeing patients.
Architectural and landscaping improvements are also proposed.
The City Council will have the final say on Shikara’s plans, including converting the building from a retail space to offices.
