BREAKING: Man dies after being pulled from canal near Belle Glade


1:10 p.m. UPDATE: A Pahokee man pulled from a submerged truck near Belle Glade Wednesday morning has died, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office reports.

Authorities have identified the man as Matthew Jenkins, 50. He was pronounced dead at Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade.

According to the sheriff’s office, Jenkins was driving south on the 6000 block of Duda Road when his truck began to drift and went into a canal. It was not immediately clear what caused the vehicle to drift, the sheriff’s office said.

Original story: A man was taken to a hospital Wednesday morning after being pulled from a semi truck submerged in canal near a rock pit south of Belle Glade, Palm Beach County Rescue reports.

The incident happened shortly before 10:30 a.m. near the 6000 block of Duda Road. Rescue divers found the man inside the truck’s cab.

He was found in critical condition, said Capt. Albert Borroto, spokesman for Fire Rescue.
