Boynton area one step away from having another Aldi grocery store

Residents are one step away from having their first Aldi grocery store.

A developer wants to build one at 3452 W. Boynton Beach Blvd. at Knuth Road. The location is about five miles from the Aldi store under construction just west of the city at Hypoluxo Road and Military Trail. The Aldi at Knuth Road would be near other major stores, including the Wal-Mart at 3200 Old Boynton Road, the Publix at 133 N. Congress Ave. and BJ’s Wholesale Club at 1540 W. Boynton Beach Blvd.

The City Commission gave store representatives the OK last week, but will have to sign off on the project a second and final time in December.

An Aldi representative told the commissioners the store would offer 15 full-time and five part-time jobs.

The store would be 17,880 square feet. The 2.04-acre site is home to a one-story, 30-year-old rundown office building, according to city documents.

The commission previously had given approval for the site to be used as a day care for up to 200 children. Aldi representatives persuaded the property owner to build a grocery store instead, according to city documents.

Aldi has several Palm Beach County locations including Royal Palm Beach, Palm Springs, Lake Park, West Palm Beach, Delray Beach and Boca Raton.

The company also has a distribution center and regional headquarters at State Road 7 and Okeechobee Boulevard in Royal Palm Beach.

In other business at the Nov. 21 meeting, commissioners signed off on a 56,160-square-foot warehouse that will be built at 1210 SW 35th Ave. off Congress Avenue.

The warehouse would be for two large tenants, although project representative Allan Hendricks said they have not been determined yet. Exeter Property Group owns the land, as well as the other two buildings in the warehouse complex.
