Average salary for those working in this new Gardens building — $83,000

The construction of a $115 million technology showcase hit a milestone Monday — the placement of the final beam in the steel framework.

The UTC Center for Intelligent Buildings on the south side of Donald Ross Road should be finished this year, according to Ashley Barrie, a UTC Climate, Controls & Security spokeswoman. The building will serve as a showcase for United Technologies’ products and systems working together.

It will be the corporate headquarters for the UTC Climate, Controls & Security division, too. The provider of building technologies has sales of $16.9 billion and about 56,500 employees around the world, according to UTC.

The center will employ at least 450, and of those, 380 will be new to Palm Beach County. The average salary is $83,000.

Gov. Rick Scott in May spoke at the groundbreaking for the roughly 225,00-square-foot complex. The state awarded UTC nearly $5 million, plus tax breaks, for choosing Florida over other southeast spots.

The company sponsors the Patriots Outpost at the Honda Classic and has a fire and carbon monoxide program Operation Save a Life. Kidde, a UTC Climate, Controls & Security brand, donated 3,000 smoke alarms with 10-year batteries and 500 carbon monoxide alarms in January to Palm Beach County fire departments for distribution.
