U.B. KINSEY/PALMVIEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OF THE ARTS

Visual arts teacher Rosemary Shaw was chosen as one of four educators chosen for the 2018 State Teacher/Artist Residency program, presented by the Hermitage Artist Retreat and the Florida Alliance for Arts Education. During a three-week summer residency at the Hermitage in Englewood, the teachers live and work as artists, without any expectation, schedule or demands.

OXBRIDGE ACADEMY

Ralph Maurer began his tenure as head of school on July 1. He succeeds John Klemme, who chose to return to his former position as an English teacher at the school. Maurer joins Oxbridge after serving as the headmaster of the International School Nido de Aguilas, an independent English-language day school in Santiago, Chile.

Rising senior Mai-Brie Conklin was presented with the University of Virginia Jefferson Award during a school assembly. Each year, high schools across the nation, through the support of local UVA Clubs, select their local Jefferson Book Award recipient. Each honoree receives a copy of “The Quotable Jefferson,” along with a bookplate and a certificate signed by the University of Virginia president.

BRIEFLY

The Florida Oceanfront National Speech & Debate Association District’s “Blue Wave” World Schools Debate team placed fifth at the recent National Championship Tournament in Fort Lauderdale. Team members include Brandon Schloss and Christopher Slaughter, Wellington High; Michael Bole, Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts; and Natalie Navarrete, Boca Raton High. Bole was recognized as the fourth-best speaker out of 1,100 competitors overall, and Navarrete placed 24th. Wellington debate coach Paul Gaba was in charge of the team.

Julie Gates, of Loggers Run Middle, Bettina Hoffman, of Spanish River High, and Robert Weiner, of Santaluces High School, were selected as 2018 Jewish Foundation for the Righteous Alfred Lerner Fellows. As newly minted fellows, the three teachers took part in the foundation’s Summer Institute, an intensive five-day course for Holocaust educators held at Columbia University in New York.

A job fair to fill bus driver positions in the School District will take place 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Central Bus Facility, 3376 Summit Blvd., West Palm Beach.
