The high-profile daughter of President Donald Trump continued the company even after accepting a White House advisor role last year. Still, Ivanka Trump’s continued connection to a for-profit enterprise has raised numerous concerns about conflicts of interest.
In a statement Tuesday, Trump said she wants to focus her career on public policy.
“When we first started this brand, no one could have predicted the success that we would achieve,” Trump said in a statement. “After 17 months in Washington, I do not know when or if I will ever return to the business, but I do know that my focus for the foreseeable future will be the work I am doing here in Washington, so making this decision now is the only fair outcome for my team and partners.”
The statement did not address the conflict of interest questions. But Trump’s eldest daughter was not the only Trump administration official to draw scrutiny in connection with the brand.
Early in 2017, another White House aide, Kellaynne Conway, drew criticism and a rebuke for urging Americans to “go buy Ivanka’s stuff” after the Nordstrom chain decided to drop the Ivanka Trump brand merchandise.
The president also entered the fray, tweeting: “My daughter Ivanka has been treated so unfairly by @Nordstrom. She is a great person — always pushing me to do the right thing! Terrible!”
