UPDATE: Jupiter Island home invasion targeted couple in their 60s

A couple in their 60s was the target of a home invasion robbery Saturday morning in Jupiter Island, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

Describing the robbery as a “rare occurrence” for the island, Sheriff William Snyder told reporters his agency will take the lead in investigating the incident. Two men believed to be in their early 20s broke into a home early Saturday and stole jewelry, cash and electronics, the sheriff’s office said.

During a news conference streamed by Palm Beach Post news partner WPTV News Channel 5, Snyder asked neighboring residents to check their security cameras for that time period. The home invasion occurred at about 4 a.m. Saturday at a residence along Links Road, near the Jupiter Island Club, the sheriff’s office said.

A 62-year-old man told investigators he and his wife were asleep when they woke up and saw someone pointing a flashlight at him. The couple told investigators they were ordered to lay face down on the floor as the suspects searched their home.

The suspects took several items, including a Macbook laptop, two iPhones, credit cards, a gold bracelet and a wedding ring, the sheriff’s office. They warned the couple not to call police for at least 20 minutes. The couple watched as the suspects went outside and waited about 20 minutes before going to the police station.

According to an arrest report, a back patio door was open and the home’s alarm had not been set.

There were no injuries, the sheriff’s office said.
