When detectives interviewed Gonzalez about his Instagram posts threatening Marathon High School, Gonzalez said he “did it as a joke,” according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office

The sheriff’s office said they were tipped off about Gonzalez after multiple concerned citizens reported his posts.

“I couldn’t be happier with how our community came together in response to these disturbing posts on social media,” said sheriff Rick Ramsay. “We were able to make a timely arrest in this case as a result of help from our fellow citizens, the hard work on behalf of the sheriff’s office and our partners at other law enforcement agencies.”

This arrest comes a little over a week after 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people at Majory Stoneman Douglas High School.
